Building Heroes Mission Statement (Military only)
Building Heroes was formed in 2013 with the vision of providing free construction skills, employability training and work experience to military veterans.
It is estimated there are 120,000 unemployed veterans of working age in the UK today, and a skills shortage of 230,000 within the building trades. The Building Heroes programme aims to bridge that gap, providing veterans with the technical skills they need to transition into a second career.
Our five week Foundation in Property Maintenance programme is available to all service leavers, and covers a range of building skills (carpentry, brickwork, tiling, plumbing, painting and decorating), the Level 1 Health and Safety in the Construction Environment, and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card; this is a pre-requisite for employment in the construction trade. Alongside this they are provided with employability skills such as CV writing, interview techniques and/or self-employment guidance as appropriate to their needs and aspirations.
During the programmes, BHEF works with each trainee to identify the next steps for that individual; this may be progression into employment, self-employment, further training or an apprenticeship, according to need. We aim to support a high percentage of our graduates into employment or self-employment within three months of leaving our programme.
